What is the ULEZ zone?

The ULEZ zone is a part of . It aims to make the air cleaner by reducing pollution. Transport for London (TfL) started it. It began covering more areas on August 29, 2023. Now, it includes all of Greater London and Heathrow Airport.

This area is working to better the air we all breathe. It does this by making sure only clean vehicles enter. The ULEZ zone pushes for the use of cars that don't make the air dirty.

Vehicles in this zone must be very clean to fit in. This rule includes cars, vans, and bikes. If a vehicle isn't clean enough, the owner pays £12.50 every day they drive there.

Heathrow Airport is also part of the ULEZ zone, which includes Terminals 2, 3, 4, and 5. This is important because many people pass through the airport, which needs to help clean the air. Vehicles that comply with the standards (or fully electric vehicles, which are exempt) face no charge.

Remember, you pay the ULEZ fee only if you drive through. If your car stays parked, you won't have to pay.

Which Vehicles Are Exempt from ULEZ?

The following are exempt from the £12.50 daily ULEZ charge:

• Fully electric vehicles — zero emission, always exempt.
• Petrol vehicles meeting Euro 4 standards (generally petrol cars registered after 2006).
• Diesel vehicles meeting Euro 6 standards (generally diesel cars registered after 2015).
• Some hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and certain plug-in hybrids (check via TfL's vehicle checker).

How do I check if my vehicle meets the ULEZ standards?

Transport for London (TfL) has an online checker for determining whether your vehicle meets the ULEZ rules. Simply type in your vehicle's number plate and location. The tool will then tell you if your vehicle meets the ULEZ standards.

Most types of vehicles, like cars, motorcycles, small vans, and even some minibuses, need to meet the ULEZ standards. If they don't, the daily charge will apply. But if your vehicle is bigger, like lorries or buses, it might not need to pay this charge. Still, they may have to pay a different charge if they don't meet the LEZ emissions standards.

Heathrow ULEZ Zone Charges

If your vehicle doesn't meet ULEZ emissions standards, you'll pay a fee to enter the Heathrow ULEZ zone. This includes cars, vans, and buses. You'll need to pay £12.50 each day you enter the ULEZ area, even if you go in and out multiple times.

It is important to know the charge applies to any journey through the ULEZ zone, not just continuous driving through it. This includes quick drop-offs and pick-ups at the terminal.

But you can avoid this charge by using other ways to get to Heathrow. Taxis and public transport don't charge the ULEZ fee. However, some taxi companies may add a ULEZ fee to their prices. So, always check this before booking a taxi.

How to Pay ULEZ Charges?

Setting up a London Road User Charging Account with TfL makes payments quick and simple. The account lets up to five people manage payments for multiple vehicles, which is convenient for families or regular business travellers.

You can also pay manually. Payments can be made up to 90 days in advance or by midnight on the third day after you drove in the zone. Miss this deadline and you risk a Penalty Charge Notice.

Alternatively, sign up for AutoPay — your account is debited automatically each time you enter the ULEZ zone, eliminating the risk of forgetting to pay.

Heavy goods vehicles, vans, and more that meet Euro VI standards don't have to pay extra ULEZ charges. But, it would help if you had an HGV Safety Permit for vehicles over 12 tonnes in Greater London. This avoids penalty charge notices.
